Derren was influenced by the success of the hypnotist Martin S. Taylor while at university and wanted to study hypnosis as a career. Brown’s other three books — Happy, A Little Happier, and Meet The People with Love, and Portraits by Brown, Derren — are for the laity. Meet The People with Love is a book of photographs. Portraits is a book of Derren’s caricature art. In A Book of Secrets: Finding Solace in a Stubborn World, Derren Brown grapples with the problem of pain and suffering in this life.

Despite his close ties with Paul McKenna, Mentalist Derren Brown has stated that while he respects the other hypnotist's work and does not "rob" him of what he has become, he sees his own talent as something completely separate from anyone else's.

In 2001, Brown moved into television and the media. His programs include Derren Brown's Mind Control (Channel 4), The Heist (Channel 5), Apocalypse: Reality TV Show, Ghost Train (Sky One), The Experiments on Channel 4, and most recently Miracle.

Derren first gained fame with a special called "Derren Brown's Trick of the Mind," which aired on Channel 4 in 2000. This was followed by two series of his psychological trickery program, "Mind Control" (2002), and two series of the groundbreaking "Fear and Faith" (2003/4).

In November 2010 he presented his new show "Derren Brown: Apocalypse" on Channel 4, which was described by the Daily Mail as "the most thrilling 90 minutes on television". Brown competed against five other prominent illusionists from around the world to attempt to fix a broken world and was joined by vocalist Charlie McDonnell.

In his first American television project, Derren Brown: The Experiments, Brown and his team tested the mind's willingness to trust or betray an individual based on certain situations. As followers of Brown's work would expect, the results of the experiments were unpredictable. This series aired on Showtime in April 2008. In September 2010, Derren hosted a seven-part ITV series entitled "Derren Brown: Trick or Treat".

Controversy

In December 2009, Brown was accused of having been responsible for the death of a man during a performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Michael Smiley died at his home in Edinburgh seven days after being admitted to the hospital with an undisclosed illness.

He had bought a ticket to see Derren Brown's show, "The Imposter", which he later claimed had left him "100 percent ill". The following day it emerged that Mr. Smiley's family had taken legal action against Brown as well as the venue. Brown said: "I have never been to Edinburgh or had any involvement in Michael Smiley's death."

In January 2010, Brown was cleared of blame by an inquest jury. The jury concluded that there is a "chance" that Mr. Smiley would have died regardless of seeing the show and that Brown had not caused the death.

However, they did conclude that the venue had breached health and safety regulations in allowing the show to take place on the same night as an event organized by a rival firm (in August 2009) at which Mr. Smiley bought tickets. This event was withdrawn before the start of "The Imposter". The venue's owner, Hallam Richards, said that the event was not a factor in Mr. Smiley's death.

The Edinburgh Fringe Society issued a statement which said: "Mr. Smiley's death was a tragedy and our sympathies are with his family and friends. However, we believe this inquest has confirmed there are no grounds for any accusation of negligence against the Fringe Society or any member of its staff."

Brown himself responded saying: "This is such an odd thing to say. I believe in my heart that I am not responsible for Michael Smiley's death. I'd rather not comment on what happened at the time of his death because it would be so speculative to do so. I think the jury came to the right decision in terms of what happened. I hope that there's no real stigma or guilt surrounding this. I don't believe that I've done anything wrong."
